BEAR RIVER HIGH SCHOOL
CROSS COUNTRY TEAM HANDBOOK
SAFETY
It is important for your safety and the safety of other team
members, that you follow a few simple rules.
-Never cross the street except at an intersection.
-Look both ways before you cross a road
-Never run in front of a moving vehicle.
-Never run in the road, run on the side or shoulder of the road.
-No horse play. It is dangerous and the cause of unnecessary injuries.
-Report all injuries to the coach. Then get them taken care of.
TEAM RULES
We as coaches do not believe in a lot of complicated rules. However
in order to develop the total athlete concept and accomplish the
goals that are in the
best interest of you the athlete and the team, there are a few
rules that will be followed. Each of the rules is accompanied by
a consequence for disobedience.
Please review and know them well. Don’t jeopardize the success
of yourself or the team by being selfish and disobeying team rules.
TOBACCO, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS
It is illegal in the state of Utah for a minor to possess or consume alcohol
or tobacco. For a person to possess a drug for which you do not have a prescription
is also illegal. America is a hero worshiping nation. Many young people look
up to high school athletes and want to be like them. Justify the pedestal that
you are placed upon by not using tobacco, alcohol and drugs. The use of these
substances is not in keeping with the total athlete concept that we are building
at Bear River High School.
CONSEQUENCES
If you are involved with the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs. You will be
required to inform your parents within 2 days after Coach MacSparran has talked
to you. Coach MacSparran will call your parents on the third day. You will
suffer the consequences according to the new school and district substance
abuse policy (see attached policy).
SCHOOL
You are required to be in class. You are expected to put the same effort into
your studies as you do cross country.
CONSEQUENCES
ATTENDANCE: Truancy will result in the student being suspended from practice
for one week, and suspended from the next meet.
GRADES: If you do not have a GPA of at least 2.5 or higher or you
have two “F” grades
from the previous trimester (spring of the previous year) you cannot
go to the meets until your grades improve.
PRACTICE
You are expected to be at practice and to be there on time. Practice begins
at 3:00 pm. you must be in the
meeting area for that particular day. We will stretch together as a team and
then run together as a team.
If you are unable to be at practice you need to talk to coach MacSparran or
coach Ewell. Part of your letter
is tied to practice attendance, so lettering in cross country could be jeopardized
because of poor attendance.
OBSERVANCE OF OTHER SCHOOL RULES
Please do not jeopardize the success of yourself or the team by
causing trouble in school. Coach MacSparran or Coach Williams will
strictly observe the rules
and guidelines outlined in the Cross Country Eligibility & Code
of Conduct.
SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT
One of the main purposes of high school athletics is to build character. Character
is emonstrated through sportsmanlike conduct on and off the field. These guidelines
are what will be expected of Bear River Cross Country Team members in regards
to sportsmanship.
-Players will respect coaches, administrators and other faculty/staff members
at both home and opponents schools.
-Players will respect the fans at home and away. If a fan has something
out of line to say, don’t lower yourself to their level by
responding. Players will show respect to officials, if something
needs to be said to an
official, Coach Macsparran or Coach Ewell will talk to him/her.
-Players will demonstrates sportsmanlike conduct by respecting
property both at home and away, locker rooms, restrooms, restaurants,
motels playing fields,
etc….
TRAVEL POLICY
When we travel we represent Bear River High School. When people talk about
our Cross Country program and school through-out the state we want them to
picture us as FIRST CLASS . For that reason team members need to be on their
best behavior at all times while traveling. If we are competing in a meet that
is not a great distance away we will dress at our school and ride over as a
team on the bus. Upon arrival if a dressing room is provided for us we will
use it. If not, we will wait on the bus until it is time to warm up. For meets
that are a great distance away we will dress at that school. You are responsible
to make sure that all of your equipment gets on the bus. Only those names that
appear on the travel list will be permitted to ride to the meet on the bus.
If you do not ride to the meet on the bus you will not be allowed to dress
for the meet. If your name is not on the list check with your coach to make
sure that it is not a mistake or to find out what you need to do to get on
the list. If you are suspended because of a rule violation you will not be
allowed to travel with the team. You must ride home on the bus at the conclusion
of the meet. The only time you will be permitted to return home on your own
is if Coach MacSparran or Coach Ewell releases you in person to your parents
(following the Cross Country meet). We will not accept notes from you or your
parents or guardians releasing you to return home with anyone.
PRACTICE
Practice is very important to the success of yourself and the team. For that
reason you will be required to attend practices. If you cannot attend for reasons
beyond your control please notify your coach and find out what your work-out
is. If you are unable to practice because of injury or illness and are still
attending school you are expected to be at practice to receive rehab and to
watch and learn. APPOINTMENTS SUCH AS DOCTOR AND DENTIST
APPOINTMENTS WILL
BE SCHEDULED AT OTHER THAN PRACTICE TIME. Practice is our preparation
for winning. As coaches we believe in the motto “PLAN THE WORK AND WORK THE PLAN” we
expect you to work hard and try to perfect yourself during practice.
Have a good time at practice but not at the expense of others on
the team. Practice
is for improvement not recreation. Prior to practice you must plan
to get all of your treatment and taping done. You are responsible
for getting this in
time for all meetings and practices. If you are late you are expected
to attend team meeting and stretch. Conditioning during practice;
we believe that all
other factors being equal the best conditioned team will win. During
your work-out it is important that you invest your full effort
in order to reap the greatest
rewards possible.
FATIGUE MAKES COWARDS OF US ALL.
THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS IS THE TOTAL PREPARATION THAT YOU ACHIEVE IN PRACTICE.
EQUIPMENT
You are responsible for the equipment you are issued (uniform). We have made
an effort to provide you with the best equipment available. If you lose an
article of equipment you are responsible for replacing it.
LETTERING
In order to letter you must earn 15 points. You can earn letter points the
following ways.
