Introduction to School/Community Council- Principal Gary Allen distributed folders to all members in attendance. He reviewed the criteria required for the Council found in the folder.
Introductions: Each member of the council introduced themselves. Principal Allen gave all members in attendance a contact list for the council.
The statistics for AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) and CRT (Criterion Reference Tests) were addressed. Bear River High School did not meet AYP this year. AYP was met with language arts, but not with math. Principal Allen explained that Geometry is the class used to measure AYP and the high school teaches those students who did not take Geometry at the middle school or were placed in the slower math track.
CRT scores were also evaluated. The school met the state requirements for the CRTs. Principal Allen also explained that the UBSCT was another test which has required additional attention. He said that if a student does not pass a section of the UBSCT test, they are mandated to take a remediation class until they pass. The state will pay for this remediation if the student passes the test.
Principal Allen also mentioned that Utah State University has required a placement test for their math classes prior to allowing students to enroll in any USU math classes at the high school. This has changed the composition of the both the USU math classes and the Pre-calculus classes offered.
Election of Officers. The council nominated and voted for council officers. Carl Petersen was nominated as President, Steve Meyer as Vice President, and Heidi Jensen as Secretary.
Other items: Trudy Hatch mentioned that Rocky Mountain Power is accepting requests for school projects. Heidi Jensen said that the English department is most needy in replacement desks and better whiteboards.
Suggestions for next meeting. The following items were suggested to be covered in the next meeting:
a) Math tutoring – is there enough time? What about during school hours?
b) Math mandatory remediation
c) Success rate for math AYP
d) Science
e) Literacy
The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 23 at 3:00 p.m. in the Career Center.
(Any council member who did not receive the information can obtain a copy by going to the main offices at the high school or in the next meeting.)
